The Opotiki Museum

Just because it's got the word museum in it don't write it off! Now known as the "Opotiki Heritage & Agricultural Society", it is an absolutely fantastic historical resource for the Opotiki community. With themed rooms and artefacts that will simply amaze you and provide an insight into what life was like for early settlers here in Opotiki.

Op Shops

Opotiki has become a bit of a hub for op shops and there are now 5 shops with a range of different clothes and items of interest. Many of the older kids enjoy taking a trip into town to pick up some bargains. Many of the shops have quality labels for bargain prices. And if your’e having a fancy dress party at the park it's a great place to start.

Opotiki Golf Course

The Opotiki Golf Course is only 7 or 8 mins from Tirohanga. The course is always kept in good condition throughout the year with relatively mild winters and productive grass growth during spring, summer and autumn. This ensures lush fairways and well manicured greens.

Cost: Affiliated Member $20, Non Affiliated Member $30

Cafes

Opotiki boasts some fine cafes and certainly punches above its weight in this department. They are The Hot Bread Shop and Cafe, Two Fish Cafe and Cross Roads Pizza to name a few.

New World Opotiki

Your nearest source for groceries would be Opotiki New World which is a newly developed large supermarket with everything you'll need.

The future of Opotiki

A lot of Opotiki's future development prospects have been resting on the development of a Harbour Project. The harbour development, which will ensure a minimum channel depth of about four metres, will create access to the harbour for larger vessels. This will allow Opotiki to become a service and processing base for the aquaculture industry.

Tirohanga Beach

Tirohanga Beach is a gentle sloping white sand beach on the eastern edge of the Bay of Plenty only 5 minutes past Opotiki. Often described as the gateway to the East Cape, Tirohanga Beach is the last accessible beach before the Raukūmara Ranges meet the ocean and the coastline becomes rocky and the beaches stoney. We are a fantastic location to stop and enjoy the beach and traditional New Zealand beachfront camping!

Tirohanga Beach for Kids

Tirohanga is fortunate to have a gentle sloping beach ideal for children and adults to swim in. Children love Tirohanga Beach, it's gradual sloping nature, with a small creek to play in, make it an ideal playground. Our camp is regularly used as a School Camp Location for this reason.

Walking and Jogging

The beach is also nice and flat for running and walking. We have a designated camping area for pets all year round and they are allowed on the beach to run free so long as they are not being a nuisance to other beach goers.

Pipi beds are exposed at low tide so collecting them for delicious pipi fritters or bait is also a favourite pastime.

Fishing Prospects

The beach extends for miles in both directions so it's easy to find a quiet section to send out a long line to one of the shellfish or worm beds which produce good size snapper.

Good surfcasting and fishing can be had on a change of light or leading up to high tide as snapper come into feed. Alternatively, if you want an almost guaranteed catch Mike Ruru runs a well regarded Fishing Charter and in the summer holiday period takes a group from the camp nearly every day.
